Viral Hepatitis Nurses

SA Health has Viral Hepatitis Nurses to provide specialist care to South Australians living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C. The aim of the nursing program is to increase access to viral hepatitis care through the provision of treatment, support and integrated care in the community.

Viral Hepatitis Nurses are clinical practice consultants (CPC) who work with patients in the community, general practice or hospital setting. They provide a link between public hospital specialist services and general practice, and give specialised support to general practitioners (GPs) to assist in the management of patients with hepatitis B or hepatitis C. Viral Hepatitis Nurses are located across the metropolitan area and can also provide care to people in some country areas.

With advanced knowledge and skills in testing, management, and treatment of viral hepatitis, they assist with the management of patients on antiviral medications and work in shared care arrangements with GPs who are experienced in prescribing medications for hepatitis C or accredited to prescribe section 100 medications for hepatitis B.

The FREE services provided by the Viral Hepatitis Nurses include:

  • General information.
  • Advice and assistance to GPs with patient work-up.
  • Education and support for patients diagnosed with viral hepatitis.
  • Streamlining of referrals and supporting patients when attending tertiary treatment centres.
  • Support and guidance during shared care treatment management.
  • Support and information post treatment.

Since June 2019, the Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB) routinely refer notifications of positive hepatitis B and hepatitis C test results to the Viral Hepatitis CPCs, enabling these specialist nurses to contact diagnosing clinicians and if required, offer support to facilitate:

  • the follow up of patients
  • contacts and
  • the provision of guideline based care.

People may self-refer and contact the Hepatitis SA's online chat or Helpline on 1800 437 222 for more information.
